After Vincent Reeves convinced a student at Kevin’s school to start handing out tainted pills, the student started displaying odd behavior, acting like immature and unusually aggressive preteens.
It was an attempt by Vincent and his benefactor, Donald Murphy, to sabotage the school at the request of a mysterious figure who kidnapped Donald’s grandson, Carson.
Concerned with the odd behavior of his students, Kevin rushed to the headmaster’s office on the top floor.

When Kevin entered, the headmaster, Isaac Fletcher, was sitting at his desk, filling out forms on his computer. He looked up and flashed Kevin a professional smile. Ah, Mr. Williams, how nice of you to drop by.
What can I do for you on this fine afternoon? Kevin took a seat opposite him. He didn’t return the smile. What’s gotten into the students, he asked.
Some of them are acting like toddlers, throwing tantrums and acting aggressively. They can’t be reasoned with. Isaac nodded and anxiously cleared his throat, grasping for an explanation to placate Kevin.
Ah, yes, those must be the senior students. Kevin looked shocked. The senior students? Aren’t they supposed to be the most grown up and responsible? Isaac nodded again.
Yes, but as seniors, they have the freedom to experiment in the lab as they please. Occasionally, they craft pills with unexpected adverse effects, but they always pass. I’m sure they’ll be back to normal within the hour.
Kevin frowned. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me. We need to change our policies to include more oversight.
Students shouldn’t be able to refine whatever they want. They need to have more respect for the ingredients they’re working with. Isaac folded his hands together and paused to think about his next words.
As I’m sure you know, Kevin, one of the things that attracts new students to this school is our hands-on approach to herbalism. The senior students’ freedom to experiment with new recipes is one of the strongest selling points of our school. It’s what separates us from our competitors.
Kevin thought back to his training at the Healing Arts School. Back then, he did learn a lot from experimenting. Remembering this, he sighed.
Okay, but we need to have stricter policies about testing the pills. There’s no reason that so many students had to take them. From now on, only one person will try experiment pills at a time, and I want signed consent forms for each of them.
Isaac nodded a third time. It seemed to be his primary means of communication. Understood, sir.
I’ll draft up a memo and implement the new policy right away. Is there anything else I can help you with? Kevin leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. Tell me about the competition tomorrow.
How many schools will be attending? Isaac nodded yet again. Yes, we have 18 different schools flying in from all over the country. There will be three different rounds of the competition.
The first will be an herbalism speed trial, followed by a martial arts battle royale, and lastly, an herbalism trivia round. It should be an extremely lively event. Kevin scratched his chin while he looked around at trophies, ribbons, and framed accreditations displayed all over the office.
We need to make sure that the school’s reputation remains as perfect as possible. Do you think we have a good chance at winning? Isaac smiled. Well, we are already nationally ranked as the top herbalism academy for teens in the country, so yes, I’d say our chances are pretty high.
We have a really excellent group of seniors this year. They are all very talented in kinds of diverse ways. Kevin stood up from his chair.

Tyler threw his head back and laughed. That sounds about right for someone like you, Kevin. I tuned into the Epic Clash a few weeks ago and I have to say your performance was very impressive.
Congratulations on taking first place. Kevin rolled his eyes. Then you must have seen that they gave me a clue instead of immediate access to the upper realm.
What a dirty trick, right? I haven’t been able to solve the riddle yet, but mark my words, I’m going to get to the upper realm eventually. Tyler nodded with a smile. I’m sure you will, Kevin.

When Kevin followed Tyler into the living room, he saw Olivia, Katja, and Mason sitting on luxurious sofas, sipping on coffee. Olivia was the first to spring up to greet him. Kevin, there you are.
How’s it going at the school? Kevin let out a soft sigh under his breath. Ah, you know what? I’m a little concerned actually. When I visited, some of the senior students were acting very strange.
The same senior students who are competing in the event tomorrow. The dean assured me everything was fine, but I don’t know. It makes me want to keep a closer eye on how things are being managed there.
Katja chimed in from the sofa. Maybe you should find a new dean to run the place. Someone you trust, you know? Kevin nodded.
I’ll add it to the list, he said with a chuckle. Mason stood up and shook Kevin’s hand. Good to see you again, Kevin.
I appreciate the invitation. It’s always nice to get a chance to visit with you and Olivia, of course. Olivia blushed when Mason smiled at her.
Katja loudly cleared her throat and chobbed Mason a glare. And Katja too. I’m happy to see all of you guys.
Kevin smiled at Mason. Mason was still trying to win his favor after so many deceits in the Epoch Clash and before that, and though Kevin had made it clear to Mason that all was forgiven and he’d even installed him in his lab in Chicago and brought Mason on this trip, Mason still felt he had to bend over backwards to be polite to Kevin and let him know about his change in loyalties. Kevin knew that playing this out might be useful someday, so he always left Mason with a bit of doubt about how he, Kevin, felt.
Kevin smirked. It’s good to see you again too, Mason. It’s been almost two hours, Kevin teased.
Mason looked embarrassed to be gushing over Kevin but he couldn’t help himself. Two long hours and just now I learned a big surprise. Olivia and Katja told me you’re going to be a father.
Congratulations. Tyler’s jaw dropped. You’re going to be a father, Kevin? I didn’t know that.
Kevin nodded his head. We just found out Lily was pregnant a few days ago. We don’t even know if it’s a boy or a girl yet.
Tyler put his hand on Kevin’s shoulder and gave it a gentle tug. Well, either way, congratulations, Kevin. When you see Lily, please pass along my best wishes.
I will, Kevin said. I haven’t had a chance to just kick back and hang out with some friends in quite a while. Do you all want to play a game or something? That night they stayed up late playing card games, chatting, and sipping on drinks.
Everyone went to bed with a smile on their face and the next morning they took a private car back to Kevin’s school to attend the Herbalist Society’s competition. There were dozens of buses lined up outside the school with students from all over the country pouring out of them. On the other side of the campus, the indoor stadium was quickly filling up.
Kevin and his friends had front row seats. Mason took a seat next to Kevin and asked, So, what does the winner of the competition get anyway? Glory more than anything, Kevin said. Just then, Isaac walked up to the center of the stadium and spoke into the microphone.
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the Herbalist Society competition, high school edition. The crowd roared in applause before Isaac continued. We are here today to evaluate the talent of young up-and-coming herbalists from all over the country.
As always, the winning school will receive a generous grant of 10 million dollars. Before we begin the first round, the Herbalist Society would like to provide you with complimentary mental sharpness pills. The contestants looked thrilled as a group of herbalists wove between their stations, handing out pills.
Seated in the back, Vincent Reeves watched with a devilish grin on his face. Vincent had made sure to bribe one of the officials to get the wrong pills into the hands of the Williams School students. Instead of mental sharpness pills, the official handed them the same pills that had driven them crazy a few days earlier, the chaos pills.
Because the pills looked no different than mental sharpness pills, the students from Kevin’s school swallowed them down without a second thought. Vincent Reeves was delighted. Once everyone had taken their pills, Isaac continued.
The first round will be a speed trial. You’ll have 15 minutes to refine a pill for the following scenario. A young man with an upset stomach and a sore throat.
The students immediately started to whisper, already brainstorming ideas. But when Kevin looked at his students, they were beginning to act a little strange. One of them was awkwardly trying to lick his elbow and another was aimlessly staring into space.
Kevin recognized the odd behavior immediately. Oh god, they’re starting to act the same way they did yesterday. This can’t be happening.
