Insta Empire Episode 771 – A SPYKevin was back at Williams Media. He had endured his first round of family therapy with Lily and Dorothy and their long journey to becoming a cohesive family unit, at least for the duration of Lily’s pregnancy. Kevin still had half a mind to kick Dorothy out of their penthouse apartment if she went too far with the insults and verbal abuse.

But she was a great caretaker for Lily, so Kevin had to grin and bear it. Surprisingly, the therapy session wasn’t the worst part of his day so far. Right as it ended, yet another assassin attacked Kevin, this time in broad daylight right in front of the therapist.

This was unusual. Assassins were usually more stealthy than that, not so inclined to attempt murder in public. But the next assassination attempt spilled over into the public as well.

Andre Hernandez’s brother D’Angelo somehow blamed Kevin for Andre’s death and was ready to kill him in revenge. Thankfully, Kevin had the skills to overturn that threat as well and send D’Angelo to jail. Frustrated to find plots against him at every turn, but still alive, Kevin realized he would have to be more alert in his day to day activities from now on.

All bets were off. He sat at his old desk at the Williams Media office, now Lily’s desk as she had taken his place running the company a while ago. He dabbed at his scrapes and cuts from the battle with the assassin and with D’Angelo.

A new product that he and Larry had been developing in his lab, topical wipes infused with healing herbs, was already closing his cuts and forming fresh pink scars where they had been. Kevin was still mulling over the news of Enzo Forbes’ death in his mind. It was all quite shocking to hear the level of corruption and violence that Williams Media had been covering up.

Andre had killed Enzo and in retaliation Dalton killed Andre. Kevin had employed Dalton as his muscle for a long time and he was used to Dalton doing this kind of vigilante justice, but it was still a lot to process. Kevin hoped that he could get Lily to cut back her hours here even more.

It wasn’t a stable environment for the mother of his child. Adriana Wright broke him out of his deep thoughts. She clicked into his office on her high heels with a look on her face like she just put out seven fires at once.

Oh, do you use this office? Kevin asked. This office is usually empty. I like to schedule time throughout the day to decompress for a few minutes, you know, cry, punch a pillow, write some angry emails that I’ll never send, that sort of thing.

Kevin chuckled. Is it that bad being on the board of directors in this place? Adriana shook her head and slumped into the love seat along the far wall. It’s the dream job, you know that.

I love working for you and for this company, but now you’re gone and everyone here is ambitious to a fault. I can’t do my job when I spend all day keeping my egos in check. You should just clean the house, get in a bunch of new green people who don’t throw salads at interns.

Kevin shrugged. It’s not my call anymore, unfortunately, but if you want to bring it up at the next board meeting, you’ll have my support. Adriana smiled at him.

The two of them had been in it together, so to speak, since Kevin first came into Money & Power. His success turned into her success, and though they were never that close outside of the office, it was nice to see that the person he had grown up with at the company had made it all the way to the board of directors. She used to be the one they threw salads at, and now she was calling the shots.

For what it’s worth, we’d be much worse off without you, Kevin told her, rolling down his shirt sleeves now that he was done dressing his wounds. I know, that’s why I can’t leave. It’s a prison of our own creation, she mused.

There are worse places to be cooped up, Kevin reminded her. Of course, I’m complaining about my job on the top floor of a high-rise in one of America’s wealthiest cities. It’s a champagne problem.

But it feels good to complain. You should come in more often. Kevin laughed.

Maybe I will. I’m doing some housekeeping because Lily is finding such great success with her charity that it might become a full-time gig. I’ll need to replace her if that’s the case, and if you’re interested in the top job.

Adriana held up a hand. Let me stop you right there. I appreciate it, but I’m in a good flow with the way things are going now.

I’ll be sure to submit my recommendations, though, if that would help. Kevin nodded. Just don’t say no yet.

Keep an open mind. You might find that the paycheck justifies the stress. Adriana pursed her lips.

Speaking of stress, should we talk about the Enzo and Andre situation? The board is asking questions and I don’t want to answer them without knowing the full story. Kevin could see the sadness in her eyes underneath all the frustration. Adriana and Enzo were close, after all, and he couldn’t believe she was still coming to work after what happened to him.

I’m sorry for your loss. I didn’t realize how out of hand things were getting here until after it all went down. But I know that Dalton didn’t act for nothing and I’ll always be grateful for his services.

Kevin told her. Adriana’s face went dark. I don’t know how you could say that.

He murdered Enzo in cold blood. I had half a mind to hire a private investigator myself to get evidence about him and lock him up for good. She was seething now.

Kevin knew why. Dalton didn’t murder Enzo, Adriana. Andre did.

Dalton killed Andre in retaliation. He avenged Enzo’s death. Adriana’s face flashed several different emotions before settling on hope.

Really? Yes, wait, why did you think Dalton killed Enzo? Adriana shrugged. I don’t know for sure, but I know about Dalton’s background. I mean, I know it’s a big accusation to say someone has connections to shady organizations, but that’s what I always assumed about him based on how he operates.

I don’t know how he came to the company, I guess. Kevin nodded. No, that’s a fair assumption, but he’s a good guy.

He and I met a long time ago and I actually saved his wife’s life on a camping trip once. He’s fiercely loyal and definitely can be aggressive, but he’s not a crook. Adriana nodded slowly.

So why would Andre want to kill Enzo? I’ve interacted with him a fair amount and he was a little shifty, sure, but he usually seemed like his head was screwed tight. Kevin sighed. He wanted Enzo’s job.

He wanted the power of that position. People have done worse for less. I just thought that barbaric kind of work ethic was a relic of times gone by.

I guess not. Now people just operate in the shadows. Adriana’s face lit up and Kevin could practically see the lightbulb shining above her head.

Wait a second. I don’t think he wanted to run Williams Media at all. What do you mean? Well, he was always lurking around board meetings and asking me questions that went way past your typical curiosity, if you want my opinion.

He always wanted to know the company’s secrets, like what talent we had our eye on and what new areas of the industry we wanted to expand into. I don’t think he wanted the top job. I think he was acting as a spy.

Adriana’s gears were really turning now and Kevin wanted to follow her into this rabbit hole, no matter if she was right about her suspicions or not. Who would he be spying on behalf of? One of our rivals or just someone who wants to see us fail? Adriana thought about it and said, Don’t you know who his mother is? Juanita Hernandez. She’s practically a town elder for Chicago media conglomerates.

She’s held high positions at all the major companies, bouncing around every decade or so for the past 40 years. I’d bet anything she wanted to start her own company. And she sent Andre in to get information about Williams Media for her and to poach talent.

Kevin felt a chill on the back of his neck. He had heard Juanita’s name, but not for a long time and never in a way that would make him see her as a threat. So if Juanita’s son was killed by one of my closest professional companions, Adriana filled in the blank.

You might have a target on your back, my friend. Kevin left the office shortly after when Adriana was called down to a lower floor to solve some work crisis. He hopped on the train back to his lab to check on Larry, Olivia, and the rest of the crew.

On the way, he researched Juanita Hernandez on his phone. She had stayed pretty much out of the spotlight, only quoted in an article here or appearing on a panel there. She had a distinguished look about her and cheekbones so high they nearly touched her eyes.

One photo caught his eye. A photo of Juanita with Annabelle DeMont, member of the union, a group of women in herbalism who had organized the kidnapping of Lily a while back. They hated Kevin, and the feeling was mutual.

If Juanita was friends with Annabelle, that was another enemy alliance for him to worry about. He decided to call Lily for a pick-me-up. Her voice had a way of calming his nerves no matter what was going on.

Her phone went to voicemail so Kevin steeled himself and called his mother-in-law Dorothy instead to see where Lily was. What do you want? Dorothy answered chipper as always. Do you know where Lily is? I can’t reach her.

What do you care? Not like you ever bothered to check in on her. Dorothy grumbled. Dorothy, please.

I just want to talk to my wife. Kevin pleaded. Dorothy sighed.

Well, she’s not here. She’s at lunch. Kevin felt relieved.

At least Lily was accounted for. Who with? I don’t know her. It’s someone called Annabelle DeMont.

Kevin froze as the train reached his stop. He had to get Lily now. She was in grave danger.
